Review and Photos: MAC Year of the Snake's Once Upon a Time Eyeshadow

MAC's Once Upon a Time eyeshadow.

I never purchase makeup products without trying them first. At minimum, I swatch them. I prefer to try them on my face. MAC's Once Upon a Time from the Year of the Snake collection was my first exception. It had me at the photo.

What a perfectly beigey-browny-pinky-champagne! I thought. Less pink than Stila's Kitten. Less golden than MAC's Jaunty, which is one of my HG products—I've hit pan on my first and am hoarding the backup I scoured the web to find.

It's perfect for all over the lid if you want a lighter look, or as a highlighter or a pop of light on the tear duct if you have a little more time.

I love it—and I loved it more when I first held it in my hand. I'll be honest about the fact that the snakeskin pattern on top made me hesitant to use it—it almost seemed to beautiful to destroy.

But I did anyway.

Here are some photos:

Once Upon a Time from MAC's online-exclusive Year of the Snake collection.

Once Upon a Time is a metallic champagne colour.

MAC Once Upon a Time is about twice the size of MAC's permanent eyeshadows. See the lovely snakeskin pattern on the top?

MAC's Once Upon a Time swatched on my arm. Please disregard my alien-pink skin. I'm usually an NC/NW 15–20.

I think it looks great on, too. Subtle, but still a lovely amount of sheen and the softest amount of colour to brighten the eye:

I applied Once Upon a Time all over the lid. Then I added some MAC Concrete in the crease for some dimension and MAC Retrospeck on the browbone and the tear duct for some light. I finished with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, Benefit They're Real! Mascara in Black, and Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara in Black.

Same look with MAC Once Upon a Time, different angle. What do you think?

Once Upon a Time wears well all day, and I can see it being an everyday staple—I'm sure I'll end up brushing it all over the lid and adding a swipe of mascara on days when I'm in a hurry before work.

Alas, not only is it limited edition—it's an online exclusive. So my joy will be short-lived!

Would I purchase again? If I could!

Rating: Four and a half stars out of five.

Available: At the time of posting, there were still a few kicking around on eBay. If you're obsessive like me, you'll consider this, but be prepared to shell out $15–$20 more than its sticker price of $25 CAD (remember, at three grams, it's twice the siz of MAC's regular shadows).

Have you tried MAC's Once Upon a Time eyeshadow? What do you think?
