Aveeno Fresh Essentials Skincare Lineup: Review

Aveeno Fresh Essentials hydrating night cream, daily nourishing moisturizer, and daily exfoliating scrub.

Does anyone have as hard a time evaluating skincare as I do? There are so many variables that affect my skin—the weather, my makeup, whether or not I'm working out (ha!), my cycle—that it can be hard to know what's harming and what's helping. But after over a month of using this set that Aveeno kindly provided, I've fallen into a rhythm with it and I'm ready to share.

Before I start, a few notes on my skin: I'm quite fair but not particularly sensitive. I don't lean too far to the extreme of either dry or oily, but I often get shiny on and around my nose by mid-day, and I have a couple of dry patches on my skin that I fight with. Besides managing these issues, I look for skincare products that offer anti-aging benefits, provide good hydration, protect me from the sun, and do a good job of removing a full face of makeup. I tell you this because what works for me won't necessarily work for you—we're all looking for something different. My hope is that if you know how these products interact with my needs, you'll be able to make a better decision about yours.

How does Aveeno Fresh Essentials skincare measure up? I'l go a product at a time.

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Hydrating Night Cream

Pros:

  • Applies smoothly and offers good hydration for nighttime.
  • Good value for $.

Cons:

  • Comes in a pot, which is not helpful. It's not especially hygienic (dipping into a pot with wet fingers again and again can create a bacteria breeding ground), and it exposes the product to air, which can mess with the active ingredients.
  • The scent (they call it southernwood) is overpowering. It mostly disappears when it's on, but I find smell during the application process unpleasant.
  • As far as I can see, there is no retinol in this product, which is something I look for in night cream.

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer

Pros:

  • Contains SPF 30. Sun protection in a day cream is a must for me.
  • Provides good hydration throughout the day.
  • Good value for $.
  • Comes with an easy-to-use pump.

Cons:

  • Scent is overpowering. See above.
  • Sometimes provides more moisture than I need on my face for daytime. Lately, I've been using it daily on my neck and décolletage, for which it's very good.

Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Exfoliating Scrub

Pros:

  • Packaging is reasonably easy to deal with. I usually prefer pumps, but this product is too thick for that.
  • Does a good job of removing makeup without being too harsh.
  • Provides gentle exfoliation.
  • Good value for $.

Cons:

  • The foaming properties make it a little too intense for me to use in the morning. I use it at night to remove my makeup and cleanse my skin. (In the mornings I use a very gentle lotion cleanser by Skoah.)
  • The product tends to thicken in the neck of the tube after a while, making it hard to dispense. I need to pry off the top and clean out the clog. Uncool.
  • Scent is overpowering. See above. Aveeno, perfume is not skincare!

Rating: Three stars out of five.

The verdict: I may or may not repurchase select products from this line. Not a bad option for drugstore skincare, but lots of room for improvement.

Available: Drugstores such as London Drugs and Shoppers Drug Mart for C$13.99–$19.99.
