Micro-Review of Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix: Some Products Just Don't Have That Thing

Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix

I get the concept of Make Up For Ever's Mist & Fix ($35 for 4.22 oz, Sephora), and I love it. A spray that protects and moisturizes my skin while prolonging the wear of my makeup? Sign me up! The problem is that even after testing it (on and off, to be fair) for the last three months, I'm just not sure it delivers.

Here's some of what Make Up For Ever says about Mist & Fix:

Mist & Fix is a setting spray that sets your makeup and creates a long-lasting hold. On top of that, the formula contains an O2 skin complex that provides oxygenation to the skin while making it more radiant (without shine). Suited for every skin tone, Mist & Fix also provides an invisible shield against environmental stress factors such as pollution and extreme temperature changes.

A few things jump out at me here:

  • The science does sound appealing. As a city dweller, I'm especially aware that the environment has an impact on my skin. Does Mist & Fix help? Hard to say. Any kind of barrier could, in theory, help protect the skin, so I'll give Mix & Fix the point on this one.
  • The idea of creating "hold" for my makeup is also appealing. Makeup that looks as fresh by day's end as it did that morning seems like an impossible dream—like winning the lottery or petting a unicorn. Does Mist & Fix help? It might. On days when I've used this, I often think I notice that my skin looks slightly fresher at 5 p.m. Of course, this may be wishful thinking. Additionally, if I unintentionally stand too close to the mist or apply a tad more than I should, it has the effect of "rinsing" away spots of foundation on my nose and chin. This potential for error kills the appeal of a setting spray for me.
  • Finally, the idea of a "finishing spray" is appealing. It's especially helpful if you use powder foundation, or you're a little too exuberant with your setting powder application. Can Mist & Fix work to make your skin look a bit dewier? Absolutely, but so can MAC Fix+, and it's slightly cheaper and has a lovely scent (Note: Mist & Fix has no discernible scent).

The verdict? The desire for a product that delivers on promises like these really made me want to love Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix. But I just can't commit. There's no spark!
