Review and Photos: MAC Bare My Soul Eyeshadow Quad

Aren't MAC limited edition collections are getting tiresome? Isn't there a new one every week? If you have an unlimited budget, I suppose it's exciting. For me, it's exhausting. Punishing. Gruelling. How dare MAC make me need that 60th pan of eyeshadow? They're going to break me.

To the detriment of my bank account, the Bare My Soul eyeshadow quad fell into the need category. As soon as I laid eyes on it online, I thought, "You must be mine." I love warm, earthy colours. As a green-eyed gal, this mix of browns, gold, and a unique green is pretty much perfect. (The heart wants what the heart wants.)

Starting from the top left in the photo above, we have Friendly, a warm, dark brown with golden shimmer. It has a Veluxe Pearl finish. It reminds me a little of Mulch, but I'd say Mulch is much more coppery. It's also lighter.

To the right of Friendly, we have Romantico, which is probably my favourite colour in the palette. I'd describe it as a brownish champagne colour, with a touch of pink. It has a Veluxe Pearl finish.

Right underneath that is Bare My Soul, which is a perfect, muted gold colour. It reminds me of brass, and it has a Lustre finish.

Finally, we have When in Rio, a unique forest-green/brown duo-chrome. It has a Frost finish.

Some of MAC's limited-edition releases have been hit or miss lately. This one is a definite hit. The texture of everything except When In Rio is excellent—and even then, it's nothing a bit of extra work with the 217 can't fix. All shadows wear beautifully over Painterly Paint Pot. They don't budge, and there's almost no fallout. Good one, MAC!

Swatches of MAC"s Bare My Soul eyeshadow quad. Left to right: Romantico, Bare My Soul, Friendly, and When in Rio. I found everything swatched true to pan except When in Rio. I had to layer quite a bit for it to look more green than brown.

MAC's Bare My Soul eyeshadow quad, applied. I put Romantico all over the lid, then tapped Bare My Soul over the middle of the lid to brighten it up a bit. Then I blended Friendly into my crease and added When in Rio to the outer corner.

Would I repurchase? If I could. I definitely see myself hitting pan on everything except When in Rio. Alas, this quad is limited edition. But MAC seems to have a habit of re-promoting certain shades every few years. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Rating: Four stars out of five. Everything except When in Rio is a home-run.

Available: It's sold out on Maccosmetics.com, but you can try your local MAC store. There are also several floating around on eBay—but shop carefully and be prepared to pay above the retail price of $52 Canadian.

Have you tried this quad or anything else from MAC's Temperature Rising collection? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!
