My Top Beauty Discoveries in 2013: The Eighth Day of Christmas

Beauty blogging this year has been great for my beauty stash and not so great for my bank account. Can you relate? But let's talk about the fun things—our stashes!

I've made some sweet discoveries this year—products that now have permanent (in some cases, daily) places in my beauty routine. In honour of the new year, I thought I'd share my top five discoveries for 2013.

1) Urban Decay's Naked 3 Palette

Big surprise, right? What an introduction to Urban Decay! Love the quality as well as the gorgeous colours in the Naked 3 palette. There are some beautiful golden pinks, mauves, and browns in this piece. I've been able to create some lovely looks with it, and I'm sure I'm only scratching the surface of its potential.

2) Le Volume de Chanel Mascara (Noir)

Talk about big, bold lashes! When I want drama, I pull out this beauty by Chanel. Even the packaging is sleek and chic—am I right? The only downside is that it's a little high-maintenance. It tends to flake and smear a little under my eyes—but adding a coat of MAC's Extended Play Lash Mascara (which is incredibly long wearing and doesn't budge after it's on—I mentioned it in this post about my favourite products) over Le Volume makes a huge difference. Worth the extra trouble? I think so.

3) MAC Fast Response Eye Cream

My under-eye area can get a bit dry. I need moisture that will leave me hydrated, but nothing so rich my concealer will slip around. MAC Fast Response Eye Cream is perfect for daytime. It brightens and leaves my under-eye area as smooth as porcelain—the perfect canvas for concealer. As a bonus, unlike most eye cream, it comes in a tube, which is so much better than a jar for hygiene and preserving the active ingredients in the product.

4) MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush

I know, I know—how did it take me so long to discover this brush, right? To be honest, it's not my daily go-to. For sweeping colour all over the lid, I prefer something a little bigger and fluffier. But for patting colour evenly in a precise area (for example, when I'm doing a smoky eye), this brush is boss.

5) Chanel Eclat Lumiere Highlighter Face Pen

I extolled the virtues of this product in a review a few months ago, and I still love it for patting over my under-eye concealer for extra colour correction and brightening. It's pricey, but one pen lasted me four months. Absolutely worth it—it makes my under-eye circles virtually disappear.

What are your top picks for 2013? Please share in the comments below!

Thanks for following my 12 Days of Christmas series. I hope you're enjoying it. See you tomorrow.

A Look With Laura Mercier's Artist Palette 2013: The Second Day of Christmas

A soft, purpley look with the 2013 Laura Mercier Artist's Palette.

For the second day of Christmas, how about a look with the Laura Mercier Artist's Palette for Eyes 2013? I was so stoked about this product I couldn't even wait for Sephora's VIB sale—I was afraid it would sell out (sure enough, it did), so I ordered it a couple of weeks early. I blame Karen over at Makeup and Beauty Blog. This look did me in.

Given that it's sold out, a full review seems unnecessary even though I said it was coming (I was too slow—sorry!). But I thought I'd share a look:

A look with Laura Mercier's Artist's Palette for Eyes 2013. If I remember correctly, I'm wearing African Violet on the lid, a mix of Bamboo and Truffle in the crease, Kir Royale in the outer corner, and Vanilla Nuts on the brow bone.

Laura Mercier's Artist's Palette for Eyes 2013.

There I am! Pardon the shadows. I'm still figuring out how to work with artificial light.

This really is a lovely palette—the colours are lovely, pigmented, soft, and blendable. If you didn't get this year's, definitely try for next year. If you truly must have this year's (and I wouldn't blame you), you could give eBay a try.

If you did get your paws on this year's palette, what do you think? I'd love to see what you've done with it. Link to your looks below.

In other news, I managed to pick up a couple of pieces from MAC's Metallic Nude Collection today: Hellbound Lipglass and Silver Dawn Eyeshadow. I'm excited to try them! (Reviews coming soon.) Are you planning on trying anything from the collection?

Merry second day of Christmas! See you tomorrow, friends.
