I'm Back! Update and Review of NARS Matte Velvet Lip Pencil in Never Say Never

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Never Say Never

Hey, guys! Guess what? I'm still alive! My master's program did try to kill me in November, but it failed! I won! I submitted my final paper (for the semester) last Friday. Since then, when I haven't been sleeping or working, I've been revelling in the sweet, sweet wonder of FREEDOM. I keep having to shake off the feeling that I need to get up and be productive like now. It's odd.

In addition to work and school, I also took a little photography course this fall. So my poor little blog has been a little neglected. I'm sorry—I'll make it up to you!

If you're interested, have a peek at some of the photos I took.

Use the arrows to scroll through the gallery. Vancouverites, what do you recognize?

There was also a whole lot of this going on while I was incommunicado:

My Domi.

My Domi.

Thanks to my faithful and handsome research assistant, though, it wasn't half-bad.

I also engaged in a fair bit of retail therapy (oops). There was the Illamasqua clearance at the Bay (again), Sephora's VIB sale, Sephora's Black Friday sale, Sephora's $20 coupon for VIBs…it hurts just typing it. My collection keeps…ahem…blooming. Time to go on a buying ban, maybe? But I digress. I'll do a haul post soon, but for now, here are some highlights:

In other news, I may have lost a memory card with some recent product photography on it (*sob*). So for today, I've dug into some old, forgotten photos to show you a product that I think will be fabulous for Christmas parties if you're not quite feeling the bold red lip: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Never Say Never. It first grabbed me because it's a beautiful, rich fuschia, but it's muted and matte. It's totally wearable—even in a conservative work environment. Here's a peek:

NARS Matte Velvet Lip Pencil in Never Say Never

I have to say, I have mixed feelings about the packaging. The pencil form makes it easy to apply and eliminates the need for liner, but I hate the idea of sharpening a lipstick—especially a $31 lipstick. Waste makes my heart hurt. Also, the cap tends to pop off, so it's not a good purse pencil.

If you can get past those things, and you can handle the dryness (you DEFINITELY want to begin with a balm or a primer with this baby), the colour is gorgeous. I love it, and I'll definitely be adding it back into my regular rotation this season.

What do you think, friends? Is NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Never Say Never Chrstmas-party worthy?

The verdict: Drying with fussy packaging, but worth it for the colour. Love.

Rating: Three and a half stars out of five. I'd like better packaging and more product for money, but that's NARS for you. #firstworldproblems

Available: Anywhere NARS products are sold for $31 Canadian (you get 2.4 grams).

Sephora Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick in Radiant Orchid: Review and Photos

Sephora Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick in Radiant Orchid.

Normally I don't pay much attention to Pantone colour of the year, but Tracy over at Beauty Reflections Blog convinced me I should this time around. This year's colour, Radiant Orchid, is just SO pretty. I think of it as a muted pinky-purple. It's still fun, but much more wearable than a bright fuchsia lippie for me. I'll even pop on Sephora's Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick in Radiant Orchid at the office!

Sephora describes this as a matte satin lipstick, but it definitely leans more satin than matte. It's MUCH less drying than something like MAC's Ruby Woo (score)! It even provides a very little bit of moisture. For good measure, though, I like to add some balm to my lips before applying.

Wear time is about standard for a good lipstick for me—a few hours provided I don't drink, eat, or fidget too much. I'll take it!

Another bonus: I'm not usually a big packaging fan, but the packaging of this product is really nice—the rectangular metal tube is very chic, and the magnetic snick when it closes is very satisfying. ;)

Ready for a look?

The outer packaging or Sephora Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick is a but over the top—I guess they're trying exta-hard to position it as a collector's item!

It comes nested in a little display box.

Sephora Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick in Radiant Orchid features sleek metal packaging with magnetic closure.

Sephora Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick swatched on my arm. The swatch looks somewhat sheer, but I find the colour looks opaque on the lips.

Sephora Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick applied over a bit of lip balm. I like it!

The verdict: Definitely a favourite lip product for the spring. If you're still making your shopping list for Sephora's spring sale, this is a good item to add—especially given it's limited edition!

Rating: Four and a half stars out of five. I like the product, but I think they should go a little easier on the (kinda wasteful) outer packaging and drop the price from $22 to $20 or $21.

Available: Sephora stores and Sephora.ca for $22 Canadian. You get 3.6 mL of product, which makes it a slightly better deal than a MAC lipstick.

Have you tried Sephora's Radiant Rush Matte Lipstick in Radiant Orchid? What about another product from the Radiant Orchid Collection? What do you think?

Pro Look: Eye of the Day a la Sephora

An eye look courtesy of JMO at Sephora (Pacific Centre, Vancouver).

This week, my camera is not my friend—I just can't get artificial light to work for me. It's a problem given the sun is down by the time I get home from work. Sigh. So rather than a review of the fabulous brush 126 by Make Up For Ever as I had planned, I give you an eye look I had done at Sephora a week ago.

One of the perks of graduating to VIB status is a free makeover, which I wasted no time cashing in on. I asked for a fun, classy look with a cat eye, and this is what a got. Hello, glamour!

Unfortunately, I don't have the name of every product JMO, the artist, used, but this is what I know I'm wearing:

  • A handful of brown and beige shades by Kat Von D on my eyes (they're from a newer, limited edition palette)
  • Urban Decay shadow in Space Cowboy (the one with the glitter!) on my lids
  • Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner in Black
  • MUFE 156 false eyelashes
  • A black eye pencil to tightline
  • Anastasia brow kit in Brunette

Alas, all I had planned for that day was homework—but I certainly enjoyed looking sensational while I did it!
