NARS Kauai Eyeshadow Duo: Review and Photos

NARS Kauai Eyeshadow Duo from the High Seize collection.

NARS has been slowly creeping into my heart lately. The products I've tried are so lovely (minus the infamous, filthy-looking-forever packaging), yet so pricey. Fortunately (or unfortunately), you do seem to get what you pay for!

Given I'm not typically one for bright, crazy colours—I'm not a big fan of wearing teals and oranges on my face—the Kauai Eyeshadow Duo was the only bit from the new High Seize collection that truly spoke to me.

The colour on the left is a metallic antique gold—it almost has a green tinge to it (NARS calls it gold lame). The colour on the right is a cool, violet purple (NARS calls it smokey orchid). Both colours have  a lot of shimmer, and they make quite  a royal-looking combination.

I don't think I've ever encountered eyeshadows that are softer, more blendable, or easier to apply. These are pigmented, and they feel buttery and luxurious. They also go on like an absolute dream.

I have only two complaints:

1) There is a bit of fallout. It's not the end of the world, though—I'm just careful to tap my brush before applying (this minimizes fallout during application and wear) and do my concealer after my eye makeup (to clean up anything that's fallen during application).

2) I do experience a bit of fading  after a few hours of wear, even when I apply the shadow over MAC Painterly Paint Pot (my everyday base). I haven't tried these shadows over a true eyeshadow primer, however. I've been thinking I may need to invest in one given Painterly doesn't seem to be doing the trick as well as it used to (*sigh*). Perhaps my eyelids are getting a tad oilier?

The Kauai duo colours are cooler-toned than the colours I usually wear on my eyes. I'm trying to decide whether it's a welcome change or not. What do you think?

Here's a look:

In the look above, I applied the gold all over the lid and into the crease, and the purple on the outer corner and the outside lower lash line. Next time, to improve the colour payoff for the purple, I'll avoid applying it over the gold—I'll just apply it onto the lid and then blend them together.

The verdict? So far, I think NARS Kauai is a beautiful, high-quality set of colours. I hope I'll love it when I try it over a primer—fortunately, I have a couple of samples to try!

Rating: Four stars out of five.
